Planning your first Kilimanjaro trek
Choosing a route, finding the right pace and what to pack — the questions to think through before you climb.

Climbing Kilimanjaro is one of the great journeys in Africa, and it starts long before the first day on the mountain. Here's what to think through when you plan.
Pick a route and a length together
There are several routes up the mountain, and they differ in scenery, difficulty and how many days they take. More days usually means more time to adjust to the altitude. Tell us how fit you feel, how much time you have and what matters most to you, and we'll suggest options.
Go at the right pace
On the mountain you'll hear pole pole — slowly, slowly. A steady pace and good rest help your body adapt. Our crews know the routes and the pace that gets you up.
Pack for every season in one trip
You'll pass through several climate zones on the way up, from warm lower slopes to freezing nights near the summit. Layers, a warm sleeping bag, good boots you've already walked in, and a head torch make a big difference. We'll send a full packing list with your plan.
Add time on the coast
Many travellers finish with a few days on Zanzibar — coast and island time after the climb, with stays and transfers arranged.
